When I think about David Rawlings and Gillian Welch one word immediately comes to mind: connection. The two long time collaborators don’t finish each others sentences, but they do complete each other’s thoughts in a complementary way. Hearing the two of them talk is like listening to two voices expressing the same idea. This repartee is not the least bit isolating–as I go to shake Gillian’s hand she looks over to Dave and goes, “Hey, Dave, Geoff is here,” as if I were an old friend coming over for a pot of tea. In their presence, everything seems welcoming, comfortable and familiar. Their music evokes the same sort of feeling. In a wide ranging conversation, David, Gillian and I talk about the nature of “story music”, the connectedness of music, songwriting and David Rawlings newest album, Poor Dave’s Almanac.
