One of the things I love about Newport Folk Festival is “finding” a new band each year. In 2016, it was The Staves harmonies echoing across the main stage and the harbor that really took my breath away. 2017 brought me The Wild Reeds, who’s album The World We Built remains one of my favorites of all time. In 2018, the new find for me was JD McPherson. His ability to blend genres and create a sound that is equal parts classic and all his own, is truly impressive, and even more so when you encounter it live in person. After his set at the fort, JD and I spoke about his musical and personal background, and of course, Lilith from Frasier.
